New Bengaluru International Airport Opening postponed by 24 hours

The Bangalore New Airport (BIAL) website issued the following statement:

"This is to announce that Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) has just received notification from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA). According to the notification, “the Central Government hereby notifies that the Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli would be commissioned w.e.f. 00.01 hours of 24th May, 2008, instead of w.e.f. 00.01 hours of 23rd May 2008 as notified earlier”.

The switch to the new airport will take place at midnight (00:01 hours of May 24). All flights landing and departing after midnight will operate from the new airport and flights arriving before midnight (on May 23, 2008) and departing after midnight will also operate from the new airport.

Commenting on the sudden notification, Albert Brunner, CEO, BIAL said, “We are taken by surprise. In fact, we have just closed a press conference communicating our preparedness for tomorrow. However, there is nothing we can do at this point. All our efforts are now towards minimizing passenger and airline inconvenience owing to this postponement.”

No other airport other than BIAL can operate commercial flights

No other airport can operate commercial flights within a radius of 150 km from new Bangalore (Bengaluru) International Airport - BIAL CEO. Brunner also added that however, the chapter is not yet closed as the matter is in the High Court.. Under the concessional agreement between the promoters, Union Civil Aviation Ministry and the Karnataka government, no airport can operate commercial flights within a radius of 150 km from new Bangalore (Bengaluru) International Airport.

There had been widespread calls for retaining the HAL Airport for different reasons. The BIA is located 40 km away from here and its takes nearly two hours to reach the airport due to bad connectivity. Further, the new airport will not be able to handle the fast growing passenger traffic expected to grow to 15 million from the present 11 million, those who are demanding the operations of the two airports argue.

BIA was promoted by a consortium of Zurich International Airport Limited, Siemens, L and T and other private sector companies. Karnataka holds 26 per cent stake in the project. The greenfield airport was spread over 4,000 acre and the first phase of the airport had been built with an investment of Rs 2,470 crore.

Car parking fees:- Rs. 40 for a two-hour time slot; every subsequent hour- Rs. 20.

Mr. Bruner said the construction of the trumpet interchange would reduce travel from the Hebbal flyover to about 20 minutes, he said. Moreover, the three transport options for travel to and from the airport — by buses, cars and taxis — would considerably reduce travel time to the new airport.

The car park at the airport can accommodate 2,000 cars.

BIAL website would have live traffic updates and a route finder.

In response to the criticism from the Air Traffic Controllers that the lack of a back-up lift at the control tower was a major lacuna, Mr. Brunner said: “Our building plan for the ATC were approved a long while ago and we cannot change it now.
